Visiting archaeologist to give lecture at CCU

April 30, 2010

“The Great Museum Beneath the Sea” is the topic of an illustrated lecture by James Delgado, president and CEO of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, scheduled for7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11 in the Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The event is free and open to the public.

Delgado will take the audience on a 3,000-year tour of some of history's greatest shipwrecks, from the oldest shipwreck ever excavated by archaeologists to the time of King Tut to Viking ships. He will discuss such events as the lost fleet of Kublai Khan off Japan, Henry XIII's warship Mary Rose, the Civil War submarine H.L. Hunley and the RMS Titanic.

During his visit to campus, Delgado will also discuss opportunities for CCU students and faculty to work with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, the world’s leading research institute in underwater archaeology. His visit and lecture are co-sponsored by the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the Waccamaw Chapter of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina.

Delgado has led or participated in shipwreck expeditions around the world. His undersea explorations include the Titanic, as well as the discoveries of RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic's survivors and the notorious ‘ghost ship’ Mary Celeste, among others. His archaeological work has also included the excavation of ships and collapsed buildings along the now-buried waterfront of Gold Rush San Francisco.

Delgado was the executive director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Vancouver, British Columbia, for 15 years before joining the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in 2008.

He co-hosted “The Sea Hunters,” an international TV documentary series, along with bestselling author Clive Cussler, from 2001 to 2006. He has also done specials for the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Explorer, A&E, the History Channel and ABC. Delgado has authored 32 books and given hundreds of presentations to audiences all over the globe.
