The CCU Theatre production of “Hedda Gabler,” the groundbreaking social drama by the 19th-century playwright Henrik Ibsen, opens on Thursday, Sept. 23 at Coastal Carolina University and runs through Saturday, Oct. 2.

Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, Friday, Sept. 24, and Wednesday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 2. There will be two shows beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 2. All performances will be in the Black Box Theatre in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Ibsen's drama, arguably the first feminist foray in theatre, is about a married woman in the late 19th century who explores her tormented desire for escape and her yearning for individual and spiritual freedom. Trapped in a conventional marriage, Hedda Gabler indulges in a cruel game, amusing herself with the misfortune she inflicts on those around her. As Hedda struggles to balance her wild desires against her restricted life, she sets into motion a manic, chilling chain of events.

The play, directed by Monica Bell, assistant professor of theatre at CCU, features student performers including musical theatre majors Emily Brockway, Nicole Borysowicz, James Wells and Caleb Jernigan, dramatic arts majors Katie Smith and John St. Croix and physical theatre major Leslie Miller.

General admission is $15; alumni, senior citizens (65+) and Osher Lifelong Learner Institute members, $10; teens (11 to 17) and children, accompanied by an adult, (10 and under), $5.
