Brockmeier to speak in visiting writers series at CCU

BNoted author Kevin Brockmeier will give a reading of his work on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University. The event, which is part of the Words to Say it Visiting Writers Series, is free and open to the public.

Brockmeier is the author of the bestselling novel "The Brief History of the Dead," the University's 2010 Big Read selection, as well as "The Truth About Celia," children's novels "City of Names" and "Grooves: A Kind of Mystery," and story collections, "Things That Fall from the Sky" and "The View from the Seventh Layer." "The Illumination," a new novel, will be published in February 2011.

Brockmeier's work has been translated into 15 different languages, and his work has appeared in such publications as The New Yorker, The Georgia Review, The Oxford American, among others. He has received the Borders Original Voices Award, three O'Henry Awards, one being a first prize, the PEN USA Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts grant.

Brockmeier was recently named one of Ganta magazine's Best Young American Novelists. He currently lives in Little Rock, Ark., where he was raised.
