CCU hosts 'Tunnel of Oppression'

Coastal Carolina University will host Tunnel of Oppression from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 and Thursday, Oct. 28 on the second floor of the Lib Jackson Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Tunnel of Oppression is a campus grassroots diversity program that originated in 1993 at Western Illinois University. Using the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, Calif., as a model, the Tunnel gives people a hands-on way to experience oppression.

Tunnel of Oppression is a multimedia tour designed to challenge peoples' ideas and perceptions about issues dealing with oppression. The Tunnel experience involves participants touring a series of rooms that present interactive skits through various multimedia outlets and role-playing to raise awareness of acts of oppression that exist in society, such as racism, hate crimes and acts of injustice. Participants will begin by touring the Tunnel in small groups, and will have an opportunity to process their experience. Following their tour, participants will receive information on how to address issues of oppression in a debriefing.

This program is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services, Counseling Services, The Office of Student Activities and Leadership, Volunteer Services, Human Resources and The Women's Resource Center.
