Coastal Carolina University's Volunteer Services Center is hosting a series of events for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week from Saturday, Nov. 13 to Friday, Nov. 19. This awareness week is a movement initiated by colleges across the nation in an effort to promote education, awareness and action about hunger and homelessness. All events are free and open to the public.

A schedule of events is as follows:

Saturday, Nov. 13

* Canned Food Drive, Donate a canned food item at Coastal Carolina's football game against Liberty at Brooks Stadium. A drop off will be set up at each entrance to the stadium. All goods collected will be donated to the Low Country Food Bank to serve the local community.

Sunday, Nov. 14

* “The Pursuit of Happiness,” a 2006 film starring Will Smith, is based on a true story of a man who becomes homeless and struggles to support himself and his son. The film is designed to illustrate that individuals become homeless for a number of reasons, therefore society should not to pass judgments. Wall Auditorium, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 15

* Feed Hungry Hearts with the Arts is an opportunity for CCU students to work with “at risk youths” from Sea Haven Transitional Living and Waccamaw Youth Center on art projects. Spadoni Park 4 to 7 p.m. outside Wheelwright Auditorium. (Rain Location: Student Center)

Wednesday, Nov. 16

* “Share the Wealth: Donate CINO Cash” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on CINO Grille. Students can donate money to Sea Haven, a local shelter home for homeless youth, using their CINO Card declining balance.

Thursday, Nov. 17

Thursday, Nov. 17

"Chanty town" from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Prince Lawn. “Chanty town” is held each year during National Hunger and Homelessness Week to promote awareness for the community's homeless. Coastal students will be camping out in cardboard boxes overnight to experience what the homeless have to deal with daily. A speaker from Street Reach Ministries in Myrtle Beach will talk about the homeless population in the area, and share personal stories of the people she has worked and how Street Reach and other agencies try to help.
