Chauncey's holiday show rocks out

Who knew there was so much talent at Coastal Carolina University?

By now, we all know, since "Chauncey's Holiday Show" was presented to a sold-out audience on Dec. 8 at Wheelwright Auditorium.

Coordinated by Lamonica Yates, the program kicked off with the 24-member Faculty and Staff Choir performing a medley of holiday hits. Patti Edwards directed the choral group, with Bill Hamilton on piano and Mark Chesanow on bass.

The 75-cast members of "The 12 Days of Christmas" led off the show, complete with milkmaids and the Chick-fil-A cow, Chauncey and his French hens, pipers/plumbers who spelled out "JOY," lords a leaping with CCU administrators' heads on stick figures and more.

There were plenty of highlights: Philip Massey singing "God Bless America," Yoav Wachsman singing "Maoz Tzur," CCU football player Moon Edwards singing "The Goodness of Jesus" and Jeniffer Silver on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Provost Robert Sheehan executed an entertaining rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy," accompanied by Steve Bailey on bass and "angels" Haven Hart, Terri DeCenzo and Martha Hunn.

The Coastal Grass Band played "Go Tell It On the Mountain" and ""In the Bleak Midwinter." The bluegrass quartet featured Tammy Holt, Dean Hudson, Richard Viso and Tom Woodle.

The Coastal Blues Dancers took a shag and swing spin on the stage, featuring Martha and Ralph Hunn, Melanie and Jeb Bennett, Kristen and Mason Floyd, and Lauren Brooks and Dustin King.

Dennis Reed sang "Let There Be Peace On Earth," and Mark Avant sang "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

The trio of Mike Hall, Phil Eddy and Barry Epps sang the "Spirit of the Holidays Medley."

The Holiday Coastalettes danced in Santa aprons and mini-skirts to "Santa Baby," and Patti Edwards performed a beautiful soprano rendition of "O Holy Night."

The trio of John Goodwin, William Hamilton and Mike Hall performed "The Christmas Song."

And, of course, no CCU show would be complete without an appearance by Virtue Trap, the faculty rock 'n' roll band with Steve Hamelman, Dan Ennis, Scott Pleasant and Joe Oestriech.

President David A. DeCenzo read "The Night Before Christmas" to children in the audience, and Chauncey made another appearance.

To quote from Charles Dickens, "God bless us, everyone!"
