Writer/composer Lutvak to perform Jan. 15 at CCU

Writer and composer Steven Lutvak will perform a comedic, cabaret-style piano concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15 in the Edwards Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University.

Lutvak will also lead a workshop on Friday, Jan. 14, on how to write, compose and perform cabaret-style songs. The workshop, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Edwards Black Box Theatre, is free and open to the public.

Lutvak has received, in addition to two Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation grants, a New American Works Grant from the NEA, the first Johnny Mercer Emerging American Songwriter Award, and with his principal collaborator, Robert L. Freedman, both the Kleban Award for Lyric Writing and the Fred Ebb Songwriting Award.

He wrote the title track to the hit film, "Mad Hot Ballroom." His newest musical, written with Robert Freedman, "A Gentleman's Guide To Love and Murder," opened last fall at the La Jolla Playhouse. Other musicals include "The Wayside Inn," "Esmeralda," "Almost September" and "Campaign Of The Century, "which was presented in a concert version in as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival, and in New York as part of the New York Musical Theater Festival, both starring Michael Rupert.

He performs his songs across the country, and can be heard on his debut CD, The Time It Takes.

General admission to the concert on Saturday, Jan, 15 is $9 and children (10 and under) are admitted free. Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) students; CCU and HGTC faculty and staff; and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute member admission is $3.
