New Student Convocation welcomes largest class

Fredanna A.D. M'Cormack, assistant professor of health promotion, talked about "Leaving a Lasting Legacy: Your Call to Action" at the New Student Convocation.
Approximately 2,000 freshmen and transfer students attended the New Student Convocation Aug. 21 on the Prince Lawn. The formal ceremony is held annually preceding the start of classes to mark the beginning of the academic year and to introduce new students to university life. The event includes a procession of faculty in their academic regalia and the signing of the honor pledge by the students.

The convocation address was delivered by Fredanna A.D. M'Cormack, assistant professor of health promotion. Her address, "Leaving a Lasting Legacy: Your Call to Action," drew on topics from this year's Big Read book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.

"Be committed to your cause and community" M'Cormack said to the students, "so when you embark on your academic journey and conduct your research, let your curiosity be driven by ethical principles. I hope that just like Henrietta's cells, your potential for growth will be limitless."

Michael Pierce, associate professor of biology and CCU academic integrity officer, administered the honor pledge to the assembled students.
