CCU to present honorary doctorate to U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers

Coastal Carolina University will present the honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service to U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers of Kentucky during a special ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at CCU's Wall Auditorium.

Rogers, who represents the 5th Congressional District of Kentucky, is in his 16th term in Congress and serves as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. He has previously served as chairman of the Subcommittees on Homeland Security and Transportation, where he has worked to support first responder training and equipment, disaster preparedness, and the enforcement of border and transportations system security. Rogers has been an important advocate for Interstate 73, helping to secure critical funding for the project.

A native of Wayne County, Ky., Rogers earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1962 and graduated from the University of Kentucky Law School in 1964. Elected to Congress in 1981, he has served on the House Appropriations Committee for 27 years. He was named chairman of the committee in December 2010.

After the ceremony, Coastal Carolina University will host a series of information sessions with Rogers and local officials, focusing on economic development, higher education, research, transportation, emergency management and other regional issues.
