CCU Theatre presents 'Iphigenia'

September 13, 2011

“Iphigenia and Other Daughters,” a play by Ellen McLaughlin, will be presented by the Coastal Carolina University Theatre from Thursday Sept. 15 through Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Edwards Theatre in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

The play is a modern adaptation of three classical Greek plays. Chrysothemis, the most dutiful member of the Atreus family, is the daughter of Agamemon and Clytemnestra, sister of Orestes and Electra, and niece of Helen of Troy. She gradually comprehends her unalterable fate in a barbarous world of revenge that begins with the slaughter of her sister, Iphigenia, by her father. She faces her lonely life of helpless waiting with dignity and whimsy. These women lost to time remain trapped until Orestes returns from battle, and Iphigenia learns how to release them all from the endless cycle of violence.

The production is directed by Monica Bell, assistant professor of theatre at CCU. The cast includes Kimberly Ward as Iphigenia, Catherine Marshall as Clytemnestra, Justina Adorno as Electra, Colleen Kerrigan as Chrysothemis, and Michael Lawrence as Orestes.

General admission is $15; alumni, senior citizens (ages 65 and over) and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Members are $10; CCU and HGTC faculty and staff are $10 (two per valid ID); CCU and HGTC students are $5 (one per valid ID); and teens (ages 11 to 17) and children (10 and under—must be accompanied by an adult) are $5.
