The modern performance company Pilobolus brings its body-bending talents to Coastal Carolina University’s Wheelwright Auditorium on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. The dance company, now celebrating its 41-year anniversary, has been featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Sesame Street” and the 79th Annual Academy Awards in 2007.

The Pilobolus style can be described as a mix of acrobatics, a figurative intertwining of bodies and modern dance techniques. The troupe, moving in groups of up to six people, creates intricate formations that resemble shapes and objects, or that tell a story through movement and physical style of choreography. The troupe has also been employed by car companies for commercials, where they contort themselves into the shapes of vehicles.

Pilobolus originated in a dance class taught by Alison Becker Chase at Dartmouth College in 1971. Since then, the company has grown into a nonprofit organization with three branches: the Pilobolus Dance Theater, a touring company; the Pilobolus Institute, which handles educational programs; and Pilobolus Creative Services, a division that provides services for advertising.

Tickets are: first floor, rows A through M, $20; rows N-S and the balcony, $15; CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students, $5 (one per valid ID); CCU and HGTC faculty/staff, $10 (two per valid ID); alumni/senior citizens (ages 65 and older), $5; Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members, $5; Teens (ages 11 to 17), $5; children (ages 10 and under), $5, but they must be accompanied by an adult.
