Math whizzes compete in annual contest at CCU

Approximately 175 high school students competed in Coastal Carolina University’s Dr. Subhash C. Saxena Math Contest held recently on the University’s campus. Eighteen South Carolina high schools took part in this year’s event.

Theschools that competed in the 2012 contest were: A.C. Flora; Academic Magnet; Academy of Arts, Science,and Technology; Aynor; Bishop England; Carvers Bay; Creek Bridge; Conway; Goose Creek; Green Sea Floyds; Hammond; Scholars Academy; South Aiken; Spring Valley; West Florence; Williston-Elko; and Wilson.

School competition winners by category were:

Competition 1- Level I: Academy for Arts, Science and Technology

Competition 1- Level II: Goose Creek High School

Competition 2- Level I: Academic Magnet High School

Competition 2- Level II: A.C. Flora High School

Overall Winner: A.C. Flora High School

Individual student winners were:

Kyle Blomberg – Goose Creek High School

Elliott Chartock – A.C. Flora High School

Laura Downing – Goose Creek High School

Josh McDermett – Academic Magnet High School

Joshua Ray – Academy for Arts, Science, and Technology

Rohan Shirali – Academic Magnet High School

Lisa Lynn Schexnayder – Scholar’s Academy

Elizabeth Snyder-Mounts – Academy for Arts, Science and Technology

Amanda Stevenson – Wilson High School

David Stoner – South Aiken High School

Mary Catherine Tilma – Aynor High School

Gray Williams – A.C. Flora High School

Students in the competition were given written examinations. Level I questions were taken from Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry; Level II questions were taken from Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Winners received $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place in each category.
