Author St. John to speak as CCU Kimbel Distinguished Lecturer
An amputee since the age of 5, St. John worked for the Clinton Administration as the director for Human Capital Issues on the White House Economic Council. She has been featured on “CNN,” “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America.” St. John is also the host of the Internet radio show “Live Your Joy,” and she travels the globe, delivering keynote addresses to corporate, financial and staffing clients.
A graduate of Harvard University, St. John was the first African American to win medals in winter paralympic competition as a ski racer, bringing home silver and two bronze medals at the 1984 Paralympics in Innsbruck, Austria. She is the author of five books, including “Getting Ahead at Work Without Leaving Your Family Behind,” “Money: Fall Down? Get Up!,” and “Live Your Joy.” Her new book, “How Great Women Lead,” co-authored with her daughter Darcy Deane, is to be released in April.
The Kimbel Distinguished Lecturer Series, established in 1983, promotes an appreciation for the intellectual value in broad social issues, religion, geopolitics and the arts. Past lectures have included Jean-Michael Cousteau and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
St. John's appearance is also sponsored, in part, by the CCU Women in Philanthropy and Leadership, through a grant from the Walmart Foundation.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Celebration of Inquiry. The theme, "From Curiosity to Exploration: Linking Knowing and Doing," is meant to be far-reaching enough to connect to topics in a variety of fields and disciplines and to be inspirational in cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches.
