Colonial Williamsburg historian James Horn will lecture on “The Lost Colony of Roanoke” at Coastal Carolina University’s Wall Auditorium on Wednesday, Mar. 28, at 5 p.m. The event, which is part of the Nancy A. Smith Distinguished Visitors Series, is free and open to the public.

Horn is vice president of Research and Historical Interpretation and O’Neill Director of the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He has served as Saunders Director of the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, editor of publications at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture at the College of William and Mary. He has also taught for 20 years at the University of Brighton, England. His latest book, “A Kingdom Strange: The Brief and Tragic History of the Lost Colony of Roanoke,” was published in 2010.

Horn is currently working on a study of the great Indian warrior chief, Openchancanough, who was the principal leader of resistance to English settlement in Virginia during the colony’s first 40 years.
