CCU offering Summer Arts Academy

The 2012 Summer Arts Academy held on the Coastal Carolina University campus kicks off in June for middle and high school students wishing to participate in an intensive study of music, visual arts or performing arts. Program fees range from $495 to $825 and include on-campus lodging and meals for students. Registration is still open.

The Music Arts Academy, directed by CCU music professor Tonya Propst, is scheduled for June 2 through 9. This workshop is designed for students of all ability levels and focuses on performance instruction, comprehensive musicianship, playing techniques, music appreciation and repertoire development. Students will rehearse and perform in sectionals, small ensembles and large ensembles. Tuition is $495.

The Performing Arts Academy runs June 10 through 22. Kenneth Martin, chair of CCU’s theater department and CCU professor of theater Thom Penn, will guide students through the art of character and monologue development, how to use proven acting techniques, stage combat and stage movement. Attendees will learn about the technical aspects of film acting in CCU’s television studio. Tuition is $750.

CCU professor of Visual Arts Susan Slavik will direct the Visual Arts Academy, scheduled for June 10 through 22. This academy is designed to give students an opportunity to create individual works of art, using advanced techniques and materials. Visual Art courses will offer experiences in creating with two-dimensional and three-dimensional media as well as with technology. Visual art choices include: drawing, figure drawing, photography, printmaking, painting, sculpture, mixed media, fiber design and crafts. Field trips will focus on three-dimensional sculpture, Kimonos, Art & Fashion museum visit, photography and public art.

The Visual Arts Academy is broken into two sections. Tuition for students currently in 6-8 grade is $750. Students in grades 9 through 11 pay $850. A supply fee of $70 is also required.
