Jack Riley

"The Constitution: A Fixed or Flexible Document?" will be the subject of Coastal Carolina University's annual Constitution Day Celebration on Monday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts' Recital Hall, room 152. This event is free and open to the public.

At this year's event, Jack Riley, associate professor of politics at CCU, will examine competing views of how to interpret the U.S. Constitution. Riley will address the following questions: Is the Constitution a living document? Is its meaning fixed? Should the original intent of the authors play a role in interpreting the Constitution?

Riley joined the CCU faculty in 1985. He earned a master's degree and a Ph.D in political science from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif. Riley's areas of expertise include American politics, the Constitution and political philosophy, with an emphasize on classical political philosophy. Riley has also served as a member of the advisory board to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.
