Bankston and Friends set to perform at Wheelwright

September 24, 2012

Coastal Carolina University music professor David Bankston will perform selections from his original CDs, the award-winning "Galvez Town" and "Jazz Blues Gospel Shoes," on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. A ticket is required.

Singer-songwriter Bankston, an associate professor of music at CCU, has taken a three-year hiatus from performing any of his original songs, but will also premiere new music.

Friend and colleague Sam Broussard of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys will join Bankston during the show, performing some of his original songs as well as tracks the two musicians have collaborated on. Broussard appeared on five tracks from Bankston's "Galvez Town" album and one song on Bankston's second album, "Jazz Blues Gospel." Broussard has also released two CDs, "Geeks" and "Veins." In 2004, Broussard was nominated for a Grammy along with Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys for the album "Bon Reves."

Bankston has been creating music for much of his life. He was a member of the folk-rock group Manchild, signed to Capitol Records in mid-1970s. Following the group's breakup, Bankston spent years performing in musical theatre and opera, including leading roles at the Houston Grand Opera and Washington Opera.
