CCU presents Shakespeare's 'Midsummer Night's Dream'

October 24, 2012

William Shakespeare's classic tale "A Midsummer Night's Dream" opens Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University's Wheelwright Auditorium.

Presented by the CCU Department of Theatre, the comedy is one of Shakespeare's most popular and accessible works and is intended for audiences of all ages. A delightful tale of magic and romance, it relates the adventures of four young, Athenian lovers who attempt to escape the tyrannical rule of their royal families by escaping into the unpredictable woods. There the star-crossed couples and a troupe of bumbling mechanicals discover themselves at the mercy of magical fairies and find that "the course of true love never did run smooth."

CCU's production is directed by Monica Bell, associate professor of theatre, whose credits include 10 years as a company member and artistic associate with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and five years as a company member with the Utah Shakespeare Festival. The production will take advantage of the large Wheelwright performance space, incorporating many forms of physical theatre, including aerial and silk work.

A large cast of students includes: Jackie Irving, Dan Wilt, Colleen Kerrigan and Connor Kendall as the lovers, and Justina Adorno and Nate Quetel as the respective Queen and King of the fairies. The rest of the cast includes a myriad of Athenians, thespians and fairies featuring: Robert Wallace, Catherine Marshall, Drew Hardy, Jamie Forestiere, Eric Waters, Justin Ables, Michael Onofaro, Nathan Smith, DeJuan Thompson, Garrett McCann, Jackson Bartelme, Krista Gierlach, Kathryn Gaffney, Suzanna Grindle, Sara Cataldo, Jessica Bryant, Korinny Sanchez, Larissa Slota, Shaleigh Phillips and Michael Golino.

Show times are: Nov. 1-2, and Nov. 7-10 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee Saturday, Nov.10, at 3 p.m.

Ticket prices are: general admission, $15; CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students, $5 (one ticket per valid ID); CCU and HGTC faculty/staff, $10 (two per valid ID); alumni and senior citizens (ages 65 and older), $10.
