Grammy-nominated Native American to perform at CCU

  Jana Mashonee
Native American singer/songwriter Jana Mashonee headlines Coastal Carolina University's annual Native American Celebration with a concert on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. The show is free and open to the public.

The seven-time Native American Music Award winner will perform songs from her 2006 Grammy-nominated album, "American Indian Story," and her most recent release, "New Moon Born."

A Lumbee Indian from North Carolina, Mashonee has toured extensively across the country, performing at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the White House. She has performed for two presidential families: at the American Indian Inaugural Ball for the Obamas and at the First Lady's Luncheon for Laura Bush.

Mashonee recently appeared in the 2012 movie "Raptor Ranch," which premiered at this year's Berlin Film festival. She is also co-author of "American Indian Story: The Adventures of Sha'kona," which is based on her 2006 album.

In addition to her musical career, Mashonee is also founder of the nonprofit organization Jana's Kids. Established in 2007, the organization provides academic scholarships to Native American students.

The Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. in Conway.
