Jazz After Hours Big Band set to perform Nov. 15

The Coastal Carolina University After Hours Big Band will perform a mix of classic and contemporary big band arrangements on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium.

The Big Band, under direction of Matthew White, will perform pieces by Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Horace Silver and Norah Jones. The group consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a vocalist and rhythm section. The CCU Jazz Combo, featuring a saxophone, guitar, bass and drums, will perform music by Sonny Rollins and Jim Hall. Special guest soloist Dan O'Reilly, a lecturer at CCU and former After Hours director, will also perform at the event.

White, assistant professor of music at CCU, received a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies from the University of North Florida and earned master's and doctorate degrees in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He was previously the featured soloist in the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra, the Gene Krupa Big Band and other ensembles.

Tickets may be purchased from the Wheelwright Box Office (843-349-2502) or prior to the performance. The hours are Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. General admission is $9; CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students, $3 (one per valid ID); CCU and HGTC faculty/staff, $3 (two per valid ID); alumni/senior citizens, $7 (ages 65 and older); Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members, $7; Youths, $3 (ages 11 to 17). Children 10 and under are free with a ticket, but must be accompanied by an adult.
