Honor Band and Scholarship Festival begins Nov 29
The festival is a three-day music camp for local youths in grades 8 through 12 with two years of playing experience. Participants audition and are placed in the Festival Wind Ensemble or the Coastal Honor Band. During the weekend, students receive instructions from guest clinicians and conductors before performing a free concert on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium.
As part of the festival, the annual Spectrum2 concert is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29, at 8:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Student music groups of Coastal Carolina University will perform a concert featuring a variety of styles, from classical to Latin music, as well as pop standards past and present. The evening will close with performances by the CCU Marching --Band, Coastal Color Guard, Coastal Glamour Twirlers and -- the Coastalettes Dance Team. This show is open to the public and a ticket is required.
The CCU Symphonic Band will present "Journey to the Castle," a fantastical adventure into history's grandest places, on Friday, Nov. 30, at 8:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. The show opens with Rossano Galante's "Journey to the Lion's Castle." Other works include the European baroque-era "Courtly Airs and Dances" by Ron Nelson and "The Merry King" by Percy Grainger. Matthew White, assistant professor of music at CCU, will perform "Escapade" for trumpets and winds. The show will conclude with a selection of holiday favorites. James L. Tully, professor of music and director of bands, will direct. Matthew Shrewsbury, a lecturer and assistant director of bands at CCU, will assist. This concert is open to the public with the purchase of a ticket. Attendance is free for Coastal Honor Band participants.
The Coastal Honor Band Concert finale will be on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Robert W. Smith, coordinator of the music industry program at Troy University in Alabama, will conduct the festival Wind Ensemble. Jay Jacobs, director of bands at McNeese State University in Louisiana, will lead the Coastal Honor Band. Recipients of scholarship awards for enrollment in Fall 2013 will also be announced. This show is free and open to the public, no ticket required.
Prices for the Spectrum2 and "Journey to the Castle" shows are: general admission, $9; CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students, $3 (one ticket per valid ID); CCU and HGTC faculty/staff, $3 (two per valid ID); alumni, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members and senior citizens (ages 65 and older), $7; Teens (ages 11 to 17), $3. Children ages 10 and under are admitted free with adult supervision.
