Edible books and magic on tap for National Library Week

April 1, 2013

Coastal Carolina University Kimbel Library joins with libraries across the United States to celebrate National Library Week, April 14 through 20. The events this year will include the return of the Edible Book Festival and a tournament of the popular role-player game, "Magic: The Gathering." Both events have no entry fee and are open to the public.

On Wednesday, April 17, no title is off limits as books get the sweet treatment at the annual Edible Book Festival. Everyone is invited to produce book-related edible creations and enter them in the contest for prizes. Whether it is food inspired by your favorite story or a pun on a book title or in the shape of a book, the important thing is to have fun with it. Voting will occur from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by an awards ceremony.

The categories this year include, Most Edible, Punniest (the funniest pun), Best Book Structure, Best in Show and Audience Favorite. A Kindle Fire will be awarded in the Best Student Entry. Other prizes include gift certificates from Eggs Up Grill and Rotelli Pizza and Pasta, four free tickets with medium popcorns vouchers to Market Common Grand 14 theater and passes to Brookgreen Garden.

The judges this year include Joey Rabon, owner of Kudzu Bakery; Michelle McMillan, cake specialist from Coccadotts; Rebecca Hamill, CCU English professor and former pastry chef; and Heather Cameron from Croissants Bakery.

On Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m., all players of "Magic: The Gathering" are invited to throw down the gauntlet for a standard play tournament. White Widow Games of Myrtle Beach will be judging the action. This event is also open to the public and the winner will receive a Dragon's Maze Booster Box.
