CCU presents Piano Concert Series III

Noted pianist and Coastal Carolina University music professor, Philip Powell will perform works by Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, and Liszt as the third edition of CCU's Piano Concert Series highlights composers of the Romantic Era, at CCU's Edwards Recital Hall on Sunday, April 21, at 4 p.m. The public is invited with the purchase of a ticket.

Powell, chair of the Department of Music and professor of piano and piano pedagogy, has been a member of the CCU faculty since 1988. He has maintained an active performing schedule with concerts frequently heard on South Carolina Public Radio. Locally, Powell has performed with the South Carolina Symphony Orchestra and the Jupiter Symphony. He is a frequent soloist with the Long Bay Symphony, playing concerto repertoire ranging from Mozart to Gershwin.

As a collaborative pianist, Powell has appeared with artists such as Martina Arroyo, soprano; Ignat Solzhenitsyn, piano; Sungwon Yang, cello; David Jolley, French horn; and most recently Tine Thing Helseth, trumpet. He has served as president of the Coastal Concert Association, music director of the Festival of Music and Art at Pawley's Island, founding director of the Musicale de Geneve series and a member of the board of directors of the Long Bay Symphony.

Powell holds the BMA from the University of Oklahoma. He also attended the Aspen Summer Music Festival as a student of the late Edith Oppens. He holds a master's degree and a doctorate in music from Indiana University.

General admission tickets are $3. CCU and Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) students and faculty are free with a ticket and valid ID. Children are free with a ticket and must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased from the Wheelwright Box Office prior to the performance or Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts is located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the CCU campus. Parking is available beside Edwards College or at Brittain Hall adjacent to Edwards.
