Day of Remembrance Ceremony to be held in Blanton Park

April 10, 2013

Coastal Carolina University's sixth annual Day of Remembrance Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, at noon. The event takes place in James B. Blanton Park, located in front of the Edward M. Singleton building. The public is invited.

The ceremony commemorates members of the CCU family students, faculty and staff who passed away during the previous year. Individuals whose lives will be honored at this event include CCU students Robert Dobson, a senior philosophy major; Gina Kosla, a junior marine science major; Anthony Liddell, a sophomore exercise and sport science major; Shawn Ponton, a senior biology major; Michael Spade, a freshman PGA Golf Management major; and Elizabeth Gorshack, freshman.

Faculty/staff members Richard Dame, distinguished professor emeritus of the Department of Marine Science; Sally Purcell, emeritus professor of the Department of English and Journalism; and Dennis Ruth, a facilities staff member will also be acknowledged during the ceremony. The bells will toll for each person whose life was lost the previous year and once for the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy.

CCU's annual Day of Remembrance Ceremony was initiated on April 20, 2007, to pay homage to the students who lost their lives during the Virginia Tech tragedy on April 16, 2007. CCU Student Government Association officers, along with other students, decided to include members of the CCU family in the ceremony as well.

This event is co-sponsored by the University's SGA and Counseling Services.
