Coastal Carolina University student Vanessa Remillard won Best in Show honors at the annual Edible Book Fair sponsored by Kimbel Library. Her red-and-white striped cake was fashioned after the stovetop hat in "The Cat in the Hat."

Remillard was awarded two tickets to a House of Blues concert.

Marine science major Danielle Massie's "The Secret Garden," her first attempt at a fondant cake, was awarded Best Student Entry, earning her a Kindle Fire.

CCU students, faculty and staff, along with members of the community, were invited to create and submit edible books, which had to be at least partially edible representations of any written work.

Winners in the various categories are:

Most Edible -- Apple Pie" by Kim Shegog

Punniest -- "Life of Pecan Pi" by Tracy Gaskin

Best Book Structure -- "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Karen James

Audience Favorite -- "The Canterbury Tales" by Sue McLean

The event was held in conjunction with National Library Week (April 14-20).

The creations were judged by Heather Cameron from Croissants; Rebecca Hamill, English professor and former pâtissier; Michelle McMillan, cake specialist from Coccadotts; and Joey Rabon from Kudzu Bakery.

The winners received a host of prizes, from a Kindle Fire, movie and concert tickets, to gift certificates at Rotelli's, Eggs Up Grill and Barnes & Noble.
