2013 Campus Salvage sale benefits local charities

Campus Salvage, Coastal Carolina University's annual yard sale designed to recycle unwanted items that students leave behind at year's end, raised $1,836, which will go into the CCU Student Green Fund.

In addition to raising money for the sustainability program, the May 18 sale also resulted in donations to 14 different nonprofits ranging from Katie's Project (prom dresses) to the Community Kitchen and the Horry County Animal Care Center.

Campus Salvage had 14 PODS full of items for sale. Most items were priced at $1, with the exception of mini fridges, microwaves, TVs and furniture; bicycles were $5.

“The sale grows in popularity every year, and we had more than 200 people waiting in line before we opened at 8 a.m.,” said Jennifer Sellers, CCU's sustainability coordinator. “We get all kinds of shoppers, from public school teachers to parents with their kids getting ready for college.”

Collection for Campus Salvage items ran from May 6 to 12, when students moved out of the residence halls. PODS were placed in five locations throughout campus to collect donations. According to Sellers, the sale not only keeps unwanted items out of the landfill, but it also supports the local community with donations.
