CCU students attend NEW program at Winthrop

May 28, 2013

Coastal Carolina University students Lina Leonard, Kaylee Yates and Ashley Bennett attended the NEW Leadership program at Winthrop University from May 19-22.

The four-day residential program was a joint initiative sponsored by CCU, Winthrop and the College of Charleston intended to give college women the knowledge and skills to become effective leaders in politics, public policy and public service.

During the Institute, participants met with women political leaders and practiced leadership skills through panel discussions, workshops and hands-on projects. After the Summer Institute, participants are encouraged to continue developing public leadership skills and become involved in community affairs.

The CCU students were awarded scholarships from the University's Women in Philanthropy and Leadership to help defray the program costs.

Beth Stedman, director of Women's Initiatives and Community Engagement at CCU, and Holley Tankersley, associate professor and chair of CCU's Department of Politics and Geography, helped coordinate CCU's involvement in the program.

The initiative is affiliated with the NEW Leadership Network created by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
