‘Monsoon Wedding’ screening begins International Culture Series

September 20, 2013

Indian director Mira Nair's 2002 film "Monsoon Wedding" opens Coastal Carolina University's International Culture series on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the James J. Johnson Auditorium. The film will be shown in Hindi, with English subtitles. The event is free and open to the public.

Punjabi and western cultures come to a head as Lalit Verma (Naseeruddin Shah) tries to organize the arranged marriage between his daughter Aditi (Vasundhara Das) and Hemant (Hemant Rai), a computer programmer from Houston whom she barely knows. Family members from India, the U.S. and Australia, all with varying opinions (and cultural viewpoints), make things interesting for the Verma clan.

Several themes are explored in the movie, including how relationships are influenced by socioeconomics, tradition and globalization. A discussion on these topics will follow the film.

Johnson Auditorium is located in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, room 116. The Wall College of Business is located at 119 Chanticleer Drive E. in Conway.

CCU's Office of Multicultural Student Services is the sponsor for this event and can be contacted for more information at 843-349-2445.
