Visiting ethicist David Killoren will moderate a panel discussion titled "College Life: Why are Women Often More Successful than Men?" at the next Java Jabber on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in Edwards College room 166 on the Coastal Carolina University campus. The public is invited to this free event.

In "Rise of Women: The Growing Gender Gap in Education and What It Means for American Schools," authors Thomas A. Diprete and Claudia Buchmann state that young women have surpassed men when it comes to earning a bachelor's degree or better. According to their research, by 2010, young women in their mid-20s surpassed their male counterparts in earning college degrees by more than 8 percentage points. The panel will delve further into this subject, while considering reasons for the growing gender gap in education.

Killoren is the Jackson Family Center Fellow. His current research focuses on skeptical challenges for moral realism; the possibility of moral perception; the prospects for first-order moral theories that accommodate moral dilemmas; the ethics of collectives; feasibility in political discourse and animal ethics.

He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his primary teaching and research interests were in ethics. Java Jabber is an open discussion on current events presented by the Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values.
