Award-winning photographer Daniel Farnum's photo exhibition, "Young Blood: Michigan's Urban Youth," opens Thursday, Oct. 10, and runs through Friday, Nov. 22. The artist will discuss his craft at a 2 p.m. gallery talk and at an opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 4:30 p.m. in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery. Both events and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

In this series of photographs, Farnum captures urban landscapes and subjects in Saginaw, Detroit, Flint, Ypsilanti and Grand Rapids, Mich., emphasizing the youth culture of these once thriving industrial cities. The photos address the American experience, landscape and culture, and have been showcased nationally in several exhibitions and galleries in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

"I focus on the disenfranchised, the misunderstood, the urban pioneers, the aspiring thugs and the hipsters whose youthfulness contrasts the harsh condition of the places in which they are photographed," says Farnum. "Of particular interest to me is how this under-populated yet developed urban landscape promotes a type of freedom due to lack of order."

Farnum's portraits have earned him numerous awards, including the Aperture Award from the Print Center in Philadelphia, two prizes from the Paul Sack Architectural Photography Contest, the grand prize at the Missouri Top 50 contest and the Juror's Selection Award given by Christopher Rauschenberg at the Center for Fine Art Photography.

According to his website, Farnum earned his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and BFA from the University of Michigan. He was a professor of photography at the University of Missouri before recently accepting a tenure-track position at the University of Tulsa.

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is located on the campus of Coastal Carolina University in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, at 133 Chanticleer Drive W., Conway.
