CCU’s theatre takes on ‘The Shape of Things'

October 4, 2013

Playwright Neil LaBute's modern adaptation of the Adam and Eve story, "The Shape of Things," will be staged in Edwards Theatre by Coastal Carolina University's Department of Theatre. The show will run Thursday, Oct. 10, through Saturday, Oct. 12, and Wednesday, Oct. 16, through Saturday, Oct. 19, with 7:30 p.m. show times. There will be an additional matinee at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

LaBute's "The Shape of Things" traces Adam Sorenson's transformation at the hands of Evelyn Ann Thompson, a graduate student in art. Adam, shy and overweight, is coached by Evelyn to take increasingly dramatic lengths to improve his physical appearance, from regularly exercising to cosmetic surgery. But why is Evelyn so insistent that he abandon his friends and strong convictions? LaBute's intense and disturbing tale dissects the ethics and power in human relationships and the space between art and life, creation and manipulation.

The show is directed by Robin Edwards-Russell, associate theatre professor and the host of "Coastal Today." The cast includes CCU theatre majors Kathryn Brown as Evelyn and Dan Wilt as Adam, with AJ Gardner serving as stage manager.

General admission tickets are $15; CCU/HGTC students and children (12 and under) are $5; and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff, alumni, OLLI members, senior citizens and teens are $10.

The Edwards Theatre is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. in Conway.
