CCU hosts Native American Celebration

Coastal Carolina University will present the dance and storytelling of Larry Yazzie and the Native Pride Dancers at the annual Native American Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at Edwards Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

The celebration is designed to educate and enhance awareness of Native American culture. Yazzie is a two-time World Champion Fancy Dancer and member of The Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa/Meskwaki. He is the founder and artistic director for Native Pride Arts, and his repertoire includes performances at the Olympics, the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Institute.

Formed in 2003 and directed by Yazzie, the Native Pride Dancers have performed for audiences of all ages throughout the world, displaying the traditions of American Indian music and dance. The show offers a variety of performance types, from solo to large ensemble productions. The current show, “Native Pride Dancer,” balances entertainment with education and features the high-energy Fancy Dance.

Edwards Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. in Conway.

This event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services. For more information, call 843-349-2863.
