CCU observes Hunger & Homelessness Week
Donations of non-perishable food, clothing, coats, jackets and blankets will be accepted at any TD Bank branch in Horry County, the CCU ticket office in Arcadia Hall and the Lib Jackson Student Center. Persons dropping of donations will receive a $5 off coupon for the Nov. 16 CCU home football game versus Presbyterian College.
Donations will go to the Lowcountry Food Bank of Myrtle Beach, while clothing, blankets, coats and jackets will be donated to New Directions of Horry County and the Sea Haven Project Lighthouse.
"We hope to create a greater awareness within our community, but also help to promote that national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness," says J.P. Peters, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer coordinator for CCU. "The plight of those without a home can be both lonely and difficult. Addressing their struggles by organizing and participating in these events may bring greater solidarity and understanding, as well as promote future involvement."

Monday, Nov. 11
- Hunger and Homelessness Activism Week Kickoff, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. Learn about all the great events that will be going on during the Week of Hunger and Homelessness Activism Week.
- S.T.A.R.'s Corn Hole Tournament, 4 to 6 p.m. on Prince Lawn. Students Taking Active Responsibility (S.T.A.R.) is sponsoring this tournament with all proceeds benefitting the Shepherd's Table in Conway. Registration is $5. Visit coastal.collegiatelink.net to register or for more information.
- Feed Hungry Hearts with the Arts Silent Auction, 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kline Hospitality Suite, Brooks Stadium. Proceeds from the auction will benefit New Directions of Horry County, a local homelessness and poverty coalition, and Students Advocating for Gender Equality (SAGE), a student organization that promotes social equality.
- Movies Screening: "Kicking It," 6 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium. Narrated by Colin Farrell and directed by Susan Koch and Jeff Werner. Focusing on the lives of people from Charlotte to Afghanistan and Russia, this 2008 documentary tells the story of the Homeless World Cup, an event that strives to change the lives of homeless people across the globe through an international soccer tournament.
Tuesday, Nov. 12
- Donate CINO Cash - Share the Wealth, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CINO Grille and Hicks Dining Hall. Come out to either location to donate CINO cash. Donations will benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank of Myrtle Beach.
- In Her Shoes: Women, Hunger and Homelessness, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. An information session on women and poverty. Attendees can also decorate flip-flops for children in Haiti and local women's shelters.
- Battered Women - Shattered Homes: The Intersection of Domestic Violence and Homelessness, 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Wall College, room 317. This lecture, sponsored by CCU's Women's and Gender Studies Program.
- Hunger Banquet, 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kline Hospitality Suite, Brooks Stadium. This interactive simulation of poverty will place attendees in a certain income level. They are then fed a meal according to where they fall on the poverty/prosperity scale. Visit coastal.collegiatelink.net to register.
Wednesday, Nov. 13
- Share the Wealth, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CINO Grille and Hicks Dining Hall. Visit CINO Grille or Hicks Dining Hall to donate CINO cash to benefit those who struggle to feed themselves. All CINO cash collected will be donated to the Lowcountry Food Bank of Myrtle Beach.
- The Tunnel of Oppression, 5 to 7:30 p.m. in Atheneum Hall. Tunnel of Oppression is a multimedia tour designed to challenge ideas and perceptions about issues dealing with oppression. Participants will begin by touring the Tunnel in small groups and will have an opportunity to process their experience.
- Chanty Town, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Teams of two to three people will compete to build the best makeshift shelter that they will reside in for the night. Participants will be able to trade nonperishable food items and gently used clothing for building materials or supply their own. To register, visit www.coastal.collegiatelink.net.
Thursday, Nov. 14
- Donate CINO Cash - Share the Wealth, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CINO Grille and Hicks Dining Hall. Visit either location to donate CINO cash. Donations will benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank of Myrtle Beach.
- Six-Minutes of Service, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. Attendees will make a blessing bag with many things that those in our community could use, such as toothpaste, toothbrush, socks, crackers, etc. We will also be making T-shirt scarves and bags to give to the homeless in Horry County.
- The Tunnel of Oppression, 5 to 7:30 p.m. in Atheneum Hall. This multimedia tour is designed to challenge ideas and perceptions about issues dealing with oppression. Participants will begin by touring the Tunnel in small groups and will have an opportunity to process their experience.
- Poverty Simulation, 6 to 9 p.m. in the Kline Hospitality Suite, Brooks Stadium. Participants assume the roles of more than 26 different families facing poverty. They are tasked with providing basic necessities and shelter during four 15-minute weeks. To register, visit www.coastal.collegiatelink.net.
Friday, Nov. 15
- Delivering and Serving Hope (D.A.S.H), from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. Lend a hand to the members of D.A.S.H. as they prepare peanut butter and jelly sandwich lunches for the homeless of Horry County.
Saturday, Nov. 16
- Food, coat, clothing and blanket drive, 3 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Donations of non-perishable food, clothing, coats, jackets and blankets will be accepted at Gates 4 and 6. Non-perishable food will be donated to Lowcountry Food Bank of Myrtle beach, clothing and blankets will be donated to New Directions of Horry County, and coats and jackets will be donated to Sea Haven Project Lighthouse.
