CCU mentors and children to tour WonderWorks

November 11, 2013

Approximately 150 of Coastal Carolina University's TEALmentors and 180 school children will enjoy a special educational experience at WonderWorks in Myrtle Beach on Thursday, Nov. 14.

CCU's Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring program will pair the college-student mentors with the children from 14 Horry County schools. Participating elementary schools include: Carolina Forest, Conway, Green Sea Floyds, Loris, Palmetto Bays, Pee Dee, River Oaks, South Conway and Waccamaw. Middle schools are Aynor, Conway, Forestbrook, Myrtle Beach and Whittemore Park.

Approximately 420 Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program's TEALmentors serve an average of 440 children each year, with mentors normally visiting their students at school for lunch, recess or during exploratory classes.

The Floyd family inaugurated the program eight years ago with a $250,000 gift. The program aims to improve South Carolina's high school graduation rates by connecting area children with college students who give them encouragement and direction.
