November 18, 2013

Coastal Carolina University presents An Evening of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn by the Grand Strand Jazz Orchestra on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. This event is open to the public with a ticket.

This program is devoted to the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, often considered to be two of the most important American composers in any style of music. The performances will highlight a set of big band jazz performances, culminating with Duke Ellington's version of "The Nutcracker Suite."

The concert will be directed by Chris Connolly, CCU teaching associate of low brass. He has performed with such acts as the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Bill Mobley's Big Band. The Grand Strand Jazz Orchestra is a professional big band, dedicated to preserving the art of Big Band Jazz and comprised of professional musicians, mostly from the Myrtle Beach area. The band includes CCU faculty members Matt White, Dan O'Reilly and CCU alumnus Simon Harding, a jazz musician based in Charleston.

General admission tickets are $15; CCU/HGTC students and children (10 and under) are $5; and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff, alumni, OLLI members, senior citizens and teens are $10.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle on the CCU campus. For tickets and additional information, contact the Wheelwright Box Office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 843-349-2787 (ARTS) or boxoffice@coastal.edu.
