Honor Band and Scholarship Festival begins Dec. 6

Coastal Carolina University's annual Honor Band and Scholarship Festival starts with a faculty recital on Friday, Dec. 6, at 1:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The recital features some of the region's most talented instrumentalists performing solos, duets and other chamber music from the Renaissance period through the 21st century. General admission is $5; CCU/HGTC students, faculty and staff are $3. Children ages 1-10 are free.

CCU's bands and chamber ensembles will present the Spectrum 2 Concert on Friday, Dec. 6, at 8:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium.

This concert will include performances from CCU's World Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Flute Choir, Jazz After Hours, Big Band, Bass Ensemble and Symphonic Band. Each band and ensemble will perform music of different styles, genres and backgrounds with no breaks or pauses between sections and groups. A grand finale will be performed by CCU's Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band.

General admission is $15; $5 for CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students; $10 for CCU and HGTC faculty/staff, alumni, OLLI members, teens (11-17), and senior citizens; and $5 for children ages 1-10. Coastal Honor Band participants are admitted free.

The Coastal Honor Band Concert concludes the festival weekend on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. Admission is free.

This performance features student musicians from grades 8 through 12 selected by audition. For two days, students are immersed in rehearsals and workshops with CCU faculty and guest artists. Rodney Winther, retired director of wind studies emeritus at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, will conduct the Festival Wind Ensemble. Josh Hinkel, CCU alumnus, composer, and director of bands at Ashley Ridge High School in Charleston, will conduct the Coastal Honor Band. Scholarship awards for enrollment in Fall 2014 will be announced during the concert.
