CCU/OLLI Global Awareness Scholarship created to support study abroad

January 13, 2014

A Global Awareness Scholarship is available to help Coastal Carolina University students involved in community service who want to study abroad.

A partnership between the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and the Office of International Programs and Services at CCU will support study abroad participation by students who are actively involved in community service in the Grand Strand Area.

In the first round of funding in Spring 2014, four students will be chosen to receive $750 to support their study abroad program participation. Students who receive this award will also be required to deliver a post-trip seminar on the results of their experience for OLLI members. In addition, the scholarship agreement provides for the potential participation by CCU faculty or staff members in an OLLI-sponsored international travel program as a supporting member, given their experience/expertise in the travel location and/or theme of the respective trip and adequate OLLI participant enrollment. Any faculty or staff members whose program costs are covered will also deliver a seminar for the OLLI membership after their return from the trip.

Recipients of the scholarship must be full-time, degree-seeking students at CCU at the time of the application and award with a GPA of at least 2.5 and with an active demonstrated and verifiable involvement in community service to the Grand Strand area. Past recipients are eligible to reapply for this scholarship, but preference will be given to those who have not yet received this award.

The establishment of a CCU/OLLI Global Awareness Scholarship is in line with the University's strategic plan to provide appropriate educational initiatives and increase accessibility to educational experiences that allow students to develop an enhanced global perspective.

"This scholarship is wonderful recognition for students who have already distinguished themselves in service to others in the Grand Strand community," said Darla Domke-Damonte, executive director of global initiatives at CCU. "The requirement for award recipients to provide a public seminar upon their return completes the loop of learning and giving that the scholarship embodies. We are grateful to OLLI's leadership council for its cooperation on this initiative."

Linda Ketron, director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at CCU, said, "The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is pleased to share the joys of international travel with CCU's academic students through this scholarship program. The benefit to OLLI is in strengthening our connections with the University, which is one aspect of our mission."
