CCU celebrates Wellness Week

February 13, 2014

Coastal Carolina University's Wellness Coalition has scheduled a variety of activities for its annual Wellness Week, Feb. 17 through 21. Unless otherwise noted, events are free and open to the public.

Highlights of the week include the Wellness Fair and a performance of "The Vagina Monologues," as well as "Mirror-less Monday" when students are encouraged to go one day without looking in the mirror to promote high self esteem and positive body image.

The Wellness Fair is on Wednesday, Feb.19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. It will include activities and games, T-shirts, displays, free eating disorder screenings for students, music by campus radio station WCCU, contests, featured exhibitions from the Teal Temptation dance club, appearances by Chauncey, and chances for students to sample healthy snacks and win prizes.

"The Vagina Monologues" by Eve Ensler will be presented on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. Tickets are $5, and proceeds will benefit the Rape Crisis Center of Horry and Georgetown counties. The University's Women's and Gender Studies and Students Advocating Gender Equality (SAGE) are hosting the play.

Campus recreation will offer featured group exercise classes throughout the week, with the highlight being "Cycle Cinema," a spinning class where participants watch "The Bachelor" on TV monitors while cycling.

The Wellness Coalition consists of students, staff, faculty and community partners who have joined forces to promote healthy eating and a positive outlook on body image. The coalition also works toward the prevention of negative influences that eating disorders and unhealthy dieting have on the lives of CCU students.

Other projects include the distribution of healthy, student-friendly recipes, ensuring nutritional alternatives at university events, and encouraging the display of nutritional information.
