Hobcaw Barony art to be exhibited at CCU
Kenny, professor of visual art at CCU, will discuss her work at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the gallery. An opening reception will also be held on the same day from 4:30 and to 6:30 p.m.
The exhibition of watercolor and mixed-media paintings explores the people, landscape, conservation and preservation of Hobcaw Barony, a 16,000-acre wildlife refuge and former rice plantation located along the Atlantic Ocean near Georgetown. The diverse ecosystems and marine life were the inspiration for Kenny's multilayered paintings.
Kenny has taught drawing and painting courses at CCU for more than 25 years. Originally from Connecticut, she was trained in a traditional method of painting and graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with an art education degree. Graduate school brought her South, and Kenny earned an MFA in painting and drawing at the University of North Carolina- Greensboro. Her paintings have been exhibited in regional, national and international shows.
"My experience on Hobcaw Barony this past spring has re-awakened my appreciation for preservation and sustainability at a time when development here on the southeast coast of South Carolina is increasingly alarming," says Kenny, whose works emphasize the importance of preserving the legacy and cultural relevance of this area.
The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the main campus in Conway. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
