Math contest for S.C. high school students is March 7

Coastal Carolina University will host the Dr. Subhash C. Saxena Math Contest for High School Students on Friday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. The event is intended to stimulate interest in mathematics among high school students. Several South Carolina high schools will compete for awards, prizes and scholarships.

The following high schools will participate: Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, Myrtle Beach; A.C. Flora, Columbia; Academic Magnet, North Charleston; Andrews; Aynor; Bishop England, Charleston; Brunswick Early College, Bolivia, N.C.; Carvers Bay, Hemingway; Conway; Georgetown; Goose Creek; Green Sea Floyds; Hammond, Columbia; Mullins; Pinewood Prep, Summerville; Scholars Academy, Conway; South Florence; West Florence; and Wilson, Florence.

Coastal Carolina University offers a Coastal Scholars Award to the highest scoring Horry County senior on the Level II test. The Level II test is an assessment of junior and senior students who have taken algebra I and II and geometry.

In addition to the competitions, CCU professors Nicholas Pritchard and Keshav Jagannathan will give a presentation titled “The Advantage of the Coin Toss for the New Overtime System in the National Football League.” Pritchard, an associate professor of statistics, earned a master’s degree at Mississippi State University and Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina. Jagannathan, an associate professor of statistics, earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Bowling Green State University.

CCU professor Andrew Incognito will present a Loop the Loop contest. Incognito, an associate professor of mathematics, earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from Temple University.

The annual math contest is made possible by an endowment fund created by Saxena, distinguished professor emeritus.
