Tom Sawyer emerging from his own book made from Rice Krispies treats, a "Fifty Shades of Grey" cake and a tasty-looking "Aunt Flossie's Hat and Crabcakes Later" cake won top honors in Coastal Carolina University's Edible Book Fair for National Library Week.

Ron Walker, a graphic designer in CCU's University Communication office, won first place in the faculty/staff category for his "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" creation complete with fondant Tom catching a fondant fish. He won a trophy and a Kimbel Library Gift Pack.

Finance student Hallie Mikesell won first place in the student category for her "Fifty Shades of Grey" cake, complete with gray icing tie and handcuffs. She won a Kindle Fire.

Second and third place student winners were Karen James, for "Here Comes Peter Cottontail," winning a $50 Visa gift card; and Taylor Keating and Katina Economidis for "The Cat in the Hat," winning a $25 Visa gift card.

In the community category, Carol Graf won for her cake "Aunt Flossie's Hat and Crabcakes Later," made to resemble a floppy spring hat. She also received a trophy and Kimbel Library Gift Pack.

CCU students, faculty and staff, along with members of the community, were invited to create and submit edible books, which had to be at least partially edible representations of any written work.

The April 16 event was held in conjunction with National Library Week and was sponsored by Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons.
