Coastal to host distance learning information sessions

Coastal Carolina University's School of Continuing Studies is sponsoring two distance learning information sessions. The events are free and open to the public.

The first session, titled "Effective Distance Learning, Teaching and Training Using Videoconferencing Technologies," will be held Friday, Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. in the S.C. National Guard Distance Learning Classroom located on the second floor of Coastal's University Hall.

The session will be led by Scott Sharer, vice president of training development for Logical Transitions, Inc., of Tybee Island, Ga. Sharer will discuss the ideas, needs and challenges associated with using videoconference technology as a component of distance learning. He will provide insight in how to maximize the use of technology with focus on effective communication via live real-time video.

Sharer has served on the faculty of Texas Christian University, Cornell University and the University of Missouri. He holds a master of fine arts degree from Texas Christian University.

The second session is titled "Faculty Issues in the Development of an Online Degree Program," which will be held Friday, Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m. in University Hall 218.

Rick Osborn, associate dean for the School of Continuing Studies at East Tennessee State University, will lead the presentation. Discussion topics include: What to Put Online: New Degree or Conversion of Existing Degree(s); Faculty Development/Training; Program Development Incentives; The Reality of Teaching Online; Faculty and Departmental Incentives; Support Services; and Impact on the University.

Osborn earned a Ph.D. in education from the University of Iowa and has worked in continuing education at various institutions since 1978.
