‘Jazz Suite No. 2’ to be featured in concert at CCU

November 21, 2014

Coastal Carolina University's Symphonic Band will perform Dimitri Shostakovich's "Jazz Suite No. 2" on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium, featuring flutist Amy Hardison Tully. General admission is $5.

Dimitri Shostakovich's work has been featured in concert halls, films and television for most of the last 100 years. "The Waltz No. 2" from the Jazz Suite was made famous by the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's film "Eyes Wide Shut."

The 43-member ensemble (plus some faculty and guest musicians) will perform other works including "The Star Spangled Banner" by Frances Scott Key; "Xerxes," a concert march by John Mackey; and "Snow Caps for Wind Orchestra" by Richard Saucedo, among others.

Faculty member Amy Hardison Tully will be featured on "Concertino Caboclo" for Flute/piccolo and Wind Band. Tully is principal flutist with the Long Bay Symphony. At CCU, she teaches flute and music history and conducts the University Flute Choir.

The concert will conclude with a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore, narrated by Dan Ennis, dean of the Edwards College of Humanities.

The Symphonic Band is conducted by James Tully, director of bands at CCU.

Tickets are $5 general admission, $4 for CCU faculty and staff, and $3 for CCU students and children. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle, Conway. Call 843-349-ARTS (2787) for more information.
