CCU presents Sankofa American Museum on Wheels

January 20, 2015

Coastal Carolina University presents the Sankofa AfricanAmerican Museum on Wheels in celebration of Black Heritage month, on view Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

One of the foremost collections of African American history spanning the period of 1860 to the present, "Sankofa" takes audiences on a journey through slavery, the era of King Cotton and days of Emancipation. The stories of famous African Americans such as Ida B. Wells, the Tuskegee Airmen, Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama will also be featured. This exhibit includes more than 20 tables of historical artifacts, pictures, writings and other tangible items, which are enhanced with a guided tour, question-and-answer session and dramatic presentation.

The Ghanaian term "sankofa" urges one to "use the wisdom of the past to build the future," which director Angela Jennings aims to accomplish through this unique history tableau.

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery is Room 129 in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive E., Conway.
