CCU to feature fiber, mixed media exhibition

February 17, 2015

"Amendments," an exhibition of mixed media, fiber-based sculptures and wall reliefs by San Francisco-based artist Marie Bergstedt, will be on display in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University from Thursday, Feb. 26, through Wednesday, April 1. On opening day, the artist will discuss her work at 2 p.m. in the gallery; a reception will follow at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Embroidery, crochet and many other textile techniques are used to create artifacts relevant to Bergstedt's life. Figures of people are made from encrusted sewing notions. Buttons and deteriorating objects reflect her family history. Inspired by personal memories and experiences, her creations mend and alter the struggle of childhood.

"For several years, I have visually reconstructed memories, both of my family and people I admire, who were able to overcome great challenges," said Bergstedt. "Most of my stories recall intense childhood experiences. All my pieces portray people with whom I have a personal relationship."

The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery is located in room 129 in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
