CCU vocal concert premieres song cycle based on Millay poems

February 19, 2015

Coastal Carolina University's Department of Music will present "A Lovely Light," a vocal concert, on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. General admission is $5.

The concert features soprano Patti Yvonne Edwards and composer/pianist Andrew Fowler in a world premiere performance of "A Lovely Light," a song cycle for soprano. At Edwards' request, Fowler composed a unique song cycle for soprano based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. The evening will also include selections from Fowler's compositions "The Prince of Tides" and "Directions for Singing."

A noted composter, Fowler serves on the music faculty at CCU, where he teaches theory and aural skills. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and Europe. His "Directions for Singing" received its world premiere at Avery Fisher Hall in New York's Lincoln Center in 2007. Fowler has also served on the faculties of Auburn University at Montgomery and the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his Ph.D.

Patti Yvonne Edwards, a native of Georgetown, is an experienced musician, performer and pedagogue. Her specialties include performing baroque arias of Handel and Bach, classical works of the 20th and 21st centuries, and American art song. She has performed with numerous symphony organizations in the United States and has been invited to the Czech Republic four times to perform recitals of American music and teach master classes at the Janacek Conservatory in Ostrava.

The Recital Hall is in room 152 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus. Parking is available behind the building or adjacent in Brittain Hall. Tickets cost $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, alumni and CCU faculty/staff, and $3 for CCU students.
