Steve Bailey and music students perform at CCU

March 16, 2015

"Command Performance: An Evening with Steve Bailey" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University. Tickets for this scholarship fundraiser are $50 and include a courtyard reception.

The concert features the musical talents of Bailey, a renowned six-string fretless bass pioneer, educator and author. Also performing will be music faculty member Matthew White and the CCU Student Jazz Combo 1. The program will include "In a Sentimental Mood," "The Boot" and an improvised solo by Bailey. Bailey is concurrently chair of the Berklee College of Music's Bass Department and artist-in-residence at CCU.

Recognized as one of the world's most innovative bass virtuosos, he has collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Jethro Tull and Willie Nelson.

The event will feature student performances by: Liz Kelley, vocals; Zach Douglas, trumpet; Nicholas Vlandis, piano; McKinley Devilbiss, bass; and Wade McMillan, drums. Songs will also feature Bailey on bass and White on trumpet.

White, assistant professor of music at CCU, earned a bachelor's degree in jazz studies from the University of North Florida and earned master's and doctoral degrees in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He was previously the featured soloist in the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra, the Gene Krupa Big Band and other ensembles.

The event is hosted by Robin Russell, professor of theatre, and proceeds will benefit scholarships in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

The Recital Hall is in room 152 of the Edwards College, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus. Parking is available behind the building or adjacent in Brittain Hall.
