CCU’s Tea & Ethics discussion on Ebola outbreak

March 19, 2015

"Ethics & the Ebola Outbreak" will be the topic of discussion for the upcoming Tea & Ethics public forum on Thursday, March 26, at 4 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University in the James J. Johnson Auditorium. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Fredanna M'Cormack McGough, a professor in the health and sciences department at CCU, will lead the discussion. McGough was born in Sierra Leone and visited there for three months last summer during the worst Ebola virus disease since its inception in 1976. McGough will focus on new policies created in response to the Ebola crisis and the ethical questions of these new policies. Among the issues to be discussed are the morality of quarantining travelers for 21 days and whether or not airlines can require passengers to undergo medical tests before they fly.

McGough has been a faculty member at CCU since 2008. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida and master's and doctoral degrees from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in health education. Her research areas include socio-ecological factors affecting maternal health outcomes and international health.

The Tea & Ethics discussion is sponsored by the Jackson Family Center for Ethics & Values.

The Johnson Auditorium is located in room 116 of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at 119 Chanticleer Drive. For more information, contact McGough at 843-349-2991 or at fmcorma@coastal.edu.
