CCU celebrates African American music

March 24, 2015

Coastal Carolina University presents "African American Music through the Years," on Tuesday, April 7, at 6 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

"African American Music through the Years" is an annual event that is organized largely by students. The show is an effort to celebrate the art, history and achievements of African Americans through a musical tribute. For the first time, faculty and staff will be joining students on stage.

Students and student groups performing music from the 1960s to the present include the Teal Temptations performing a Bobby Brown mix and Alaina "AJ" Jordan singing "You got it Bad" by Usher, as well as other student, faculty and staff performers.

Faculty/staff will perform music from 1920s to 1950s. Dan Gilbert will sing the gospel standard "Take My Hand Precious Lord/ Just a Closer Walk to Thee". Derek Doss will perform Nat King Cole's "Walkin' My Baby Back Home," and Sara Peacock will sing "Dream a Little Dream of Me," popularized by Ella Fitzgerald. David Manigo will also be featured singing Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World".

The Office of Multicultural Student Services sponsors the event. The student coordinators are Kenny Jackson, Essence Jennings and Kelly Madera.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle off University Boulevard. For more information, contact the Office Of Multicultural Student Services at 843-349-2863.
