CCU celebrates Earth Day throughout April

March 25, 2015

Earth Day is April 22, but Coastal Carolina University will be celebrating all during the month of April. During this month of focus on sustainability and going green, you can buy fresh produce on Prince Lawn, watch a documentary on plastic waste or sign up for an office waste audit.

As a part of this month-long celebration, Sustain Coastal's Eco-Rep Leaders will spearhead many of the educational events, including Landfill on the Lawn, the Bottle Walk and Weigh the Waste, to teach others about waste reduction and environmental issues.

The Earth Fair, a collaborative event with Campus Recreation and the Swain Scholars, will be on Wednesday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. The Farmers Market, in partnership with the Waccamaw Market Cooperative, will be Wednesday, April 29, on Prince Lawn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Plastic Paradise," a documentary about the plastic waste in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, will be screened on April 22 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Theater for free with free popcorn.

As a special part of Earth Month, Eco-Rep Leaders will be conducting waste audits for all offices on campus for free. Participants will be eligible for prizes and an opportunity to work towards a green office certification. To schedule your office waste audit, contact Jennifer Sellers at Sustain Coastal, jennifer@coastal.edu.

Posters for Earth Month were designed by Gwendolyn Washington and Katie Riley, students from professor Paul Olsen's graphic design class.

During the entire month, Dining Services will offer a 25 cents discount at Starbucks, Starbucks mobile truck, Einstein Bros and CINO Grille when students, staff and faculty bring their reusable cup/mug.
